They have to determine whether the risk they are taking in loaning the money to their clients will be properly compensated in terms of risk, "payback period," Net Present Value, etc. Securities Analyst/Trader -- When securities firms buy or sell other people's debts, they must determine the Net Present Value (NPV), annuities, etc. I know you're not interested in Finance, but the point of Finance (in a nutshell) is to figure out how much you're willing to pay NOW for a future return.
