How much extra money will my finance and I get when we get married?

Sweet Sweet Advice asked:

My finance and I are going to end up getting married but I was wondering how much extra money and benifits we will get so I can gauge whether we should go ahead and do it now or take our time. He is an e-5. Thanks!
Food allowance? So I knew the Bah wasn’t much but what extra are there is it true there is a food allowance? We don’t live on base and he is on shore duty if that helps.

  1. Joseph D Says:

UM NOT MUCH JUST A LITTLE BUMP IN BAH UNTIL DEPLOYMENT

  2. Am Says:

He will get BAH at the dependent rate if you choose not to live on post. This amount is dependent on where he is stationed. Because he is already in you are considered an aquired dependent, the military will not pay for your initial move to be with him. That is if you don’t already live near where he is. You will get medical & dental insurance, a dependent ID, and that’s about it. He does not get extra base pay for having a dependent.

If you are refering to BAH, it would depend on your locality. I’m stationed in PA and when I got married my BAH went up $275.

  4. Christin K Says:

Here is a link. What he gets will depend on where you live, and how long he’s been in, and his rank. It’s now Variable Housing Allowance –not Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) anymore.

  5. Rob G Says:

Do it. If you are going to anyways. The pay may seem small at first but the benefits will add up quickly. Go onto google and type in “BAH for military” you can research where you live and what they will pay. You will also get a food allowance of roughly $300 a month also. overall it should be in the neighborhood of over 1k a month.

  6. NWIP Says:

BAH w/dependents based on his command’s zip code. If he is already living out in town with you then the difference is around $200 or so per month.

Family Separation when he is gone longer than 30 days on deployment, TAD, TDY or schooling. It is $250 per month.

Benefits for you are base access, medical and dental ($13 a month for 1 dependent or $31 per month for family).

you can live in military housing or remain out in town.

He will pay less taxes because he is now filing married

ETA - BAS he will not qualify for it being in the Navy and married, the Navy does it differently, what matters if he is on Shore Duty or Sea Duty. If he is on Sea Duty then the meals are being provided for him through the galley, this means he gets all of it deducted except around $50 per month. If he is on Shore Duty now like you mention then he is already getting BAS. So that part of the pay will not change at all.

  7. Mrsjvb Says:

BAH at the with dependent rate.. which is about $200 over the single rate. that’s it unless he deploys and qualifies for Family Sep ($250/month after being gone 31 days).

  8. MarathonWomen Says:

You do not get a food allowance, he does.

“BAS is meant to offset costs for a member’s meals. This allowance is based in the historic origins of the military in which the military provided room and board (or rations) as part of a member’s pay. This allowance is not intended to offset the costs of meals for family members.”
